A typical Dick Francis novel involving horses, wounded heroes forced into solving a mystery regarding their families and loved ones.  In this novel it is Ned Talbot a 37 year old bookmaker with a wife who has bipolar disorder.

The books starts off very quickly when Ned Talbot is going about his daily business in a normal fashion and quickly finds out that his Father, who he thought had died 37 years ago is actually alive and making a bet with him at Ascot races.

The book carries on in a similar quick paced fashion with many twists and turns throughout.  and Ned is catapulted into a world he knows nothing about and must try and solve the mystery of his fathers sudden appearance and his even quicker disappearance whilst keeping his 'new life' away from his wife, as not to upset her.

All in all a very easy read which keeps the reader entertained until the end.  If you're looking for a scary thriller then this probably isn't for you as most of the characters are fairly ordinary.  A lot of research has gone into the book, but in places a bit too much and there is in parts too much explanation, where Francis goes into too much detail, where it might have been better to to add some menace and threat.  Nevertheless an easy book to pick up and pass the hours with.
